New Years' Resolutions? This Works Much Better |
|
Tired of the make-and-break pattern of resolutions? Try this |
We’re far enough into the New Year now that we’ve had time
not only to make New Year resolutions, but even to break some.
That’s the problem with going about change in that way. In over 40 years of counseling practice, I saw that
‘make-‘em-break ‘em’dynamic with everyone who attempted change that way.
After considerable experimentation, we came up with a much better way - better because it not only produced better
results, but provided an internal guidance mechanism for making decisions all along the way.
It’s called it ‘envisioning’, and it proved so popular and effective that we ended up making it a yearly New Year
event.
The key to its effectiveness is accessing a different part of the brain than the one that makes resolutions. The
process, in short, involves first unplugging from your life as you know it right now - the to-do lists, concerns,
commitments, etc. and temporarily letting them float away tobe picked up again later.
Next, you imagine you have the power to create your life as you want it without allowing your ‘logical’ or
‘yes-but’mind to intervene, you picture (again, not think, but picture that this year has already ended and you’re
now enjoying the results that you’ve created over the year.
Last, using magic markers, crayons, drawings, pictures and words ripped out of old magazines, you make a
representation of it on paper.(We found using a time limit for this last part worked great to help prevent the
logical mind from kicking in.) Then, put this where you’ll glance at at frequently as you go about your day.
You can try it for yourself and see.
Once you have your guiding vision, I hope you’ll consider paying special attention to your emotional life, because
that's where the stumbling blocks lie that you may be tempted to let defeat you. If you'd like a resource toward
that end, I suggest the free eBook, Your Emotional Self, Five Secrets for a Successful Emotional Life, available
here.
It will acquaint you with how your emotional self is constructed, stage-by-stage. And, happily, those same stages
are the ones to use to manifest the vision you've just created.
Happy New Year!
